Movie Review: Warm Bodies (2013)

warm_bodies

Warm Bodies has a familiar premise: love conquers all. But the well-examined idea of love conquering all is wrapped in a horror coating. The thing love has to conquer in Warm Bodies is death. In this world, the surviving humans have been confined to a walled section of the city while the dead shamble freely. The movie wants to be a horror rom-com, but with its PG-13 rating, it’s not much of a horror movie, and unfortunately when the bodies start to warm up, the romance falls flat. Read More

john dies at the end poster

Don Coscarelli directed one of my favorite films, Bubba Ho-Tep. The film has an odd sense of humor; it stars Bruce Campbell as Sebastian Haff, a man who claims to be the late Elvis Presley. With the help of JFK (Ossie Davis), the two battle an ancient evil Egyptian mummy. Unfortunately, the quirky charm of Bubba Ho-Tep is absent from Coscarelli’s new film, John Dies at the End. Based on the book by David Wong, John Dies at the End wants to be a comedic horror film, but it fails to be funny or scary. Read More

There is a rich tradition of creature features, horrors and sci-fi films of all types, with a fervent fan base, who are a constant source of inventive new talent. Many great artists have emerged through the Roger Corman studio or other similar studios such as Troma, who specialise in this kind of film, and where would we be without these places where new ideas & people can be fostered?

Hansel-Gretel-Witch-Hunters-Poster

The children’s tale of Hansel & Gretel stops after they shove the witch in the oven and burn her alive. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters imagines what life could have been like if the tale followed them to adulthood. Starring Jeremy Renner (The Avengers) as Hansel and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) as Gretel, the film is a rollicking and fast-paced action flick. Read More

Movie Review: The Divide (2011)

Survivors of a nuclear attack on New York are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic. Xavier Gens’ end of the world film The Divide firmly draws the line between good and bad and then lets the bad fester away till there is no good left. It is nothing new for a Xavier Gens film and maybe that is the problem…

mamma poster

My father was adopted, so I have known from an early age that parenthood is not defined by blood. My grandparents did what all good parents do; they clothed, fed, protected and loved my father. As I have gotten older and experienced more of the world, I have been able to verify repeatedly that actions determine the quality of the parents, not the mere fact of being related by genes. What traits make the best mother? Do you have to give birth in order to be a good mother? Mama, the first feature from Andres Muschietti, explores the idea of motherhood and attempts to answer these questions. Read More

Movie Review: A Haunted House (2013)

A Haunted House

A Haunted House is Marlon Wayans’s latest entry in his library of horror parodies. Unfortunately, the outrageous charm of Scary Movie is lacking in this dud. The film, directed by Michael Tiddes, is a take on the found footage films of Paranormal Activity and The Devil Inside. Instead of mining this subgenre of horror to create a biting satire on a well-worn idea, A Haunted House is littered with stereotypes that drain the film of any humor. Read More

Bookworms: Deck Z: The Titanic – Unsinkable, Undead (2012)

By  •  Books

Set on the RMS Titanic, Theodor Weiss, is carrying the key to the zombie apocalypse, a black like substance called, “The Toxic.” When the Toxic is stolen by a German agent and the virus is released onto the ship’s lower deck, a team of strangers come together to try and stop the disease from spreading. Onion Contributors, Chris Pauls and Matt Solomon, have managed in their novel to not only blend together multiple historical events but also to give a new take on certain zombie conventions.
