Morgan Freeman Reveals Fate of Lucius Fox

Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman): “Mr. Wayne, if you don’t want to tell me exactly what you’re doing…when I’m asked, I don’t have to lie. But don’t think of me as an idiot.”

Actor Morgan Freeman, who plays Lucius Fox (one of Bruce Wayne’s numerous father figures in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy), has revealed that character’s fate.

Created by writer Len Wein and artist John Calnan, Lucius Fox first appeared in Batman #307 (January, 1979) as a new CEO hired to manage Wayne Enterprises and restore the Wayne family business to health after years of neglect by Bruce Wayne have left the company on shaky financial grounds. In the movie Batman Begins, he appears as Bruce Wayne’s gadget guy, Batman’s version of James Bond’s Q, but ends the film as the new CEO. In The Dark Knight, he continues aiding Bruce in both capacities and also serves a moral voice, expressing his concern over Batman’s invasive use of technology when the Dark Knight is desperate to track down the Joker.

After the death of actor Heath Ledger, who played the Joker brilliantly in The Dark Knight, writer-director Nolan originally had no next story he wanted to tell without Ledger’s Joker, not until he decided to tell a story no previous film ever had: how Batman’s crime fighting career ends. With such finality, viewers worry about the fates of all characters involved. Will Batman die? How about Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, and Lucius Fox? Surely Bruce Wayne is fated to lose at least one of his surrogate fathers. Will they die?
