Archie Comics’ superhero imprint, Dark Circle Comics, announced today that writer Frank Tieri and artist Felix Ruix would be bringing seventy-four year old Golden Age superhero, The Hangman, back to comic stands later this year.  Frank Tieri and Felix Ruiz have both written for Wolverine, and the creative team can be expected to bring their darker, grittier styles to bear on the series.

The Hangman isn’t a book for the squeamish,” explained Dark Circle Comics Editor Alex Segura to Comic Book Resources. “We want to explore different genres and push the envelope with some of the best talents in comics and beyond. This book will surprise people. It’s not what you expect — which is exactly what Dark Circle is about.”  He later compared the upcoming comic to “Quentin Tarantino adapting a Stephen King novel.”

The Hangman goes way back with Archie Comics.  He first appeared in Pep Comics #17, which was cover dated July, 1941.  This resuscitated hero joins The Black Hood, The Shield, and the Fox in the Dark Circle lineup, which leaves only The Jaguar, The Web, The Fly, and Fly Girl as notable Archie superhero characters yet to be announced.
