Rivers of London is a book (known as Midnight Riot in the US) by Ben Aaronovitch released in 2011 to critical acclaim. Over the years the characters appeared in comics. Rivers of London: Black Mould #1 is the latest, on sale October 12. It has a delightfully silly premise with an interesting, well-written story behind it.

Peter Grant is in the Metropolitan Police and also a trainee wizard. He and his boss, Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale investigates, investigate crimes which the comic refers to as having a more “esoteric flavour”. Peter isn’t having the best of times since his partner and friend, Lesley May, has turned bad and joined Peter’s nemesis, the Faceless Man. Lucky for Peter he has a new sidekick in Sahra Guleed who has no time for the magical side of things. In Rivers of London: Black Mould #1, Peter and Sahra is investigating some mysterious mould while DCI Nightingale battles with a haunted ice cream van. Luckily Nightingale has a plan which is exactly as detailed as it needs to be – one of my personal highlights of the week. Another highlight was Sahra looking for the mould as she casually sings and enjoys a glass of wine.

Rivers of London: Black Mould #1 has a perfect balance of humour and a quirky story. Possessed vehicles are scary but possessed ice cream vans are scary and hilarious – exactly like Black Mould.

It creeps! It crawls! It ooooozes! Something dark and slimy is dripping through the walls of suburban London. Not usually a police matter but there’s something very weird about this mould. Police Constable Peter Grant and his unwilling partner, Sahra Guleed, soon find themselves knee deep in killer muck! Meanwhile, their boss, Thomas Nightingale, is preparing to do battle against a haunted ice cream van. Good times.
