DC Entertainment has created their first digital comic bundles, and readers can obtain quality digital comics at up to 27% off by virtue of this promotion.
The bundles are being billed as “evergreen,” presumably because they are digital and not print, and “essential” comics. Readers will no doubt find the graphic novel collections to be essential collections of DC’s most provocative and intellectual content, but the collections that are being sold as “Essential Batman,” without a single comic drawn by Dick Sprang, or “Essential Superman,” without a panel of Curt Swan—-not to mention Bill Finger, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, or the other great creators nearer the base of these two iconic pillars of the DC Universe—ring false. There’s a good reason why this content is not in the bundle, though: much of the content is not available for purchase online in a digital format. While other publishers with as deep a history as DC Comics have dug deep into their archives, DC still has a shallow digital library by comparison. Until DC Entertainment has a library of digital vintage comics to rival Marvel Comics or Archie Comics, they will be unable to provide an “Essential Batman” or “Essential Superman” collection to their customers. However, if these customers are looking for a collection of some of DC Comics’ more recent Batman and Superman “greatest hits,” they are headed in the right direction, and these “Essential” bundles to serve the purpose of providing a lot of content for a cheap price.
