Taking place between #699 and #700 in the Naruto manga, The Last takes place two years after the second-to-last chapter. Here’s how Viz Media described the movie:

In the film, the moon is approaching dangerously close to Earth! Unless something is done, the moon will disintegrate, showering the earth with gigantic meteorites. As the clock ticks towards the end of the world, can Naruto save the earth from this crisis?

While the movie delivers the action expected of a Shonen Jump series, The Last is also a romance, as it elaborates on the relationship between Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuga. Tsuneo Kobayashi (The Twelve Kingdoms, Emma: A Victorian Romance, Kurokami The Animation) directed the final Naruto movie, while manga creator Masashi Kishimoto wrote the original story and provided character designs.

Below is the official trailer for the North American limited theatrical release of The Last.
