On May 21st and 22nd, the Pittsburgh region will be getting yet another pop culture convention, and its third that is comic book themed, the 3 Rivers Comicon.
Perhaps wishing to distinguish it from Wizard World, which is at the David L Lawrence Convention Center, and Steel City Con, which is at the Monroeville Convention Center, the showrunners of the inaugural convention have located it at an entirely different space from either of them, the Century III Mall in West Mifflin, PA. The Century III Mall is already known to Pittsburgh area comic collectors as well, as it is the home for one of the larger of the New Dimension Comics locations.
The area of the mall devoted to the show remains a mystery, but the legendary talent that has been revealed thus far for the show is a pretty staggering roster, not limited to but including Swamp Thing artist and Alan Moore collaborator, John Totleben, Justice League artist Kevin Maguire, Justice Machine creator Mike Gustovich, New Mutants co-creator Bob McLeod, Pat and Shelly Block of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics, Green Lantern: New Guardians and Luther Strode writer Justin Jordan, and Ron Frenz, the artist probably most well-known for changing the look of iconic superheroes: not just Spider-Man and Superman, but also The Mighty Thor.
In addition to the heavy Artists’ Alley at the show, this convention also has comic book publishers coming to the show, including Action Lab and Valiant Entertainment. This marks Valiant Entertainment’s first appearance at a Pittsburgh show in this century.
If comics aren’t your thing, maybe you’ll enjoy the Heroclix or Magic the Gathering tournaments. Additionally, Jon Engel of New Dimension Comics advised me that the gaming tables are for everyone to enjoy, and open gaming is welcome at 3 Rivers Comicon. If gamers run out of room, the New Dimension Comics location at Century III Mall also has available tables; in fact, there will be a 5th Edition D&D game being run in tandem.
Those that like to fill their head space will be happy to know there are lots of panels, including WRITE OR WRONG: “The 10 Commandments of Working With Artists,” Green Lantern: Join the Corp with Darryle Banks and Justin Jordan, Fogel’s Underground Price & Grading Guide (the FUGG), LICENSE TO DRAW – Finding the Art in Licensed Properties, Networking and Promotion for Creators in the Online Age: Twitch TV, Podcasts and Patreon, and two from Valiant: Valiant 101: New Fans Start Here, and Valiant 4001 A.D. and Beyond.
The weekend pass is only $15, but if you want to pay a little more there is a $40 level that includes attendance to the Exclusive Beer Release Party, where a beer, designed by Dawn artist Joe Lisner, will be on hand.
Additionally, when you your buy your ticket at the $40 level, you get this awesome variant of Valiant’s 4001 A.D. as well. Only 500 copies were printed.
With legendary creators on hand, a dealers room, show exclusives, and panels, the first 3 Rivers Comicon is a show not to be missed. Buy tickets here.
