Fantagraphics is releasing Invitation To Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography Of Les McCann 1960-1980 this Spring in a hardcover edition.

This collection of Les McCann’s intimate photos of music culture across two decades includes photos of a very young Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sammy Davis Jr., John Coltrane, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Richard Pryor, Quincy Jones, Tina Turner, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, B.B. King, Errol Garner, Stanley Clarke, Bill Evans, Lionel Hampton, and other celebrities, such as Muhammed Ali, and Stokely Carmichael.  These photos were taken at picturesque locations, such as clubs, studios, and festivals around the world.

Curated by Pat Thomas (Listen, Whitey!: The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975), the book also features commentary from McCann himself.

You can pre-order this book directly from Fantagraphics, and if you’d like to see a nineteen page preview, follow this link. Fantagraphics recommends that you accompany your reading of the excerpt with this soundtrack:
